jonathan: first, an arrest made after a teenaged girl was stabbed to death. we broke this as breaking news last night. the police say the deadly encounter started with an argument on a metro bus. alison: they are still piecing together how this escalated. let's get right to jay korff with new information on the

suspect here? jay: in the last hour, we have learned a lot about 18-year-old kyla jones. the authorities say that she knew the victim and turner celfin in after last night's argument that turned fatal. along the 600 block of emerson street in northwest, crime scene tape secures a small bouquet of flowers. earlier, this intersection was the the police say that two teenaged girls know to each other argued on an approaching metro bus. later, the verbal altercation spilled onto the street, where one teenager stabbed the other in the chest. 17-year-old kaelia minor was pronounced dead at the hospital. tonight, they announced the arrest of 18-year-old suspect kyla jones.

here, and this is not child's play. one of them is dead. jay: mayor muriel bowser is talking candidly about the deadly confrontation that was entirely avoidable. mayor bowser: i don't know the motive behind this, i don't know what caused this fight, but i know whatever it was, it was not important enough for a 17-year-old to be dead and one to have signed her life away. jay: motive. what was the argument about on the bus? we should learn more about that in the wake of kyla jones' first quarter appearance, scheduled for tomorrow. alison: this just in from loudoun county, a report of a clown incident in ashburn.

during the evening rush on route seven. sky track 7 flew over the scene. three other people were hurt, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening. the circumstances are still under investigation. jonathan: it was a wild chain of events and prints are discounting him a robbery, a car crash, then a carjacking. the suspects got away. one week later, we have new surveillance video and our first chance to hear the frantic 911 calls made after the robbery. tim barber has tonight's revelations. surveillance video was violent. despite what you are about to witness, remember that these robbers only got away with 400 bucks. two robbers burst through the diner door. seconds later, a third walks in and pistol whips the cashier twice before he forces him to pull cash from the register. all three robbers are in and out

three guys, masked, just left. tim: you can hear the panic in the voice. >> they got into a car and fled. >> they told me not to come out. >> is everybody ok? tim: when we interview the cashier the next day, blood was still dripping from his ear. >> they said everybody get on the floor. tim: they before they crashed on the bw parkway, causing a seven-vehicle pileup. then they shot at an suv until the driver handed it over. they recover the stolen suv in northwest washington, but not the robbers. all of that for 400 bucks. seven people were taken to hospital, luckily only with minor injuries. developing now, a chillingly familiar story, bullets flying right into homes.

prince william county, bringing the total number of shootings to more than 20. tom roussey went searching for answers and has with the police are saying. tom: alison, i met the intersection in this neighborhood. sunday night, just before 10:00, gunshots that way, two striking a home. minutes later, gunshots this way, one of them striking a home. prince william county say it's difficult to patrol to stop these incidents because they keep happening over a widely scattered area. >> we just heard two shots and we stayed away from the windows. tom: neighbors heard the shots 10:00 sunday night. >> i got up, checked my house come and everything seemed ok. tom: the next day when she was walking by her upstairs guest bedroom -- >> i said there is a lot of light in that room.

tom: she said that you can see the bullet fragment in this picture. >> if my blinds had not been in my window, it would have went through the wall. tom: she said the bullet would have headed towards the better that she was in. she heard the police that night, heading to this other neighborhood homes that was hit in two places minutes earlier. the homeowners say they were not home. prince william county homes hit by unexplainable gunfire this year. county police believe most incidents are not connected. they say they do not think there is one person or group randomly shooting homes, but they believe in some cases they involve misusing a gun and firing an errant shot not intended for the house. prince william county police are asking residents for help.

your neighborhood or if you hear gunfire, please call immediately. the quicker they get to the neighborhood, the quicker they hopefully apprehend somebody in the future. reporting live in woodbridge, tom roussey, abc 7 news. alison: the same goes for this next story -- there is a search for suspects after a series of car break-ins and thefts in arlington. as many as 20 cars were broken into, four of them stolen between saturday and north arlington in the west over neighborhood. this morning, another stolen car and three more break-ins. the police say keep your car locked, keep valuables out of view you, and report any suspicious activity. jonathan: still ahead -- staggering new stats about student debt. how much worse it has gotten. alison: and a touching story of compassion.

magazine. stay with abc seven and 7 for updates. alison: a lesson in compassion from a mom in new mexico. the sweet reason that she packs two one just for her young son. she said that her son asked her to pack extra food for a little boy who needs it. that child's mother lost her job and cannot afford to pay for a school lunch. >> she said, it's for this little boy at school. it hits home because a few years ago we were homeless. we were living in our car. we did not have food. alison: the girl's volleyball team at the school raised more than $400 to pay them back. instead, she gave the money to the cafeteria for all past due accounts for kids who need lunch.
